Music in the Philippines, coming from an Austronesian tradition, was transformed by the European music influences through four centuries of Spanish colonial rule (1565-1898) and the development of institutionalized Western music education during five decades of US governance (1898-1946). Aided with the broad reach of modern communication technologies, the Philippines had once become the leading Asian authority in Western classical and popular music.Half a century has passed since the independence of the Philippines and part of the traditional music culture of the Philippines has been preserved through the efforts of its scholars and elders. Through the traditional music culture, the young generations in the Philippines are acquainted with their own past and bound closer to their homeland. This essay reviews the measures taken in the Philippines to salvage its identity when its traditional culture was on the verge of extinction and the Philippine passage towards the convergence of tradition and modernity in the evolving culture landscape.
