Wang, Hai-yen
Chin (a seven-strings zither) song "Zui Ong Cao" with lyric composed by Su Dong Po of Song Dynasty was originated from the "Zui Ong Ting Ji" (The Account of Old Drinker) of O-Yang Xiu. The author also found a "Rui He Xian" tunes in a Chin score book "He Wen Phonetic Notation Chin Score", for which, Huang Shan Gu composed a poem "Zui Ong Ting" that is equally skilled and impressive. Chin scores for the "Zui Ong Cao" of Su Dong Po include "Feng Xuan Xuan Ping", "Lung Hu Chin Music", and "Dong Gao Chin Music" in Ming dynasty. In the "Jiu Gong Score Collection" collated in Q'ing dynasty, there is also a song named "Zui Ong Cao." A note at the end of the score says: "Zui Ong Cao was composed by Su Dong Po. Although it has been included in the Jiu Gong, its tones are akin to the sounds of Chin playing and we are not sure if such arrangement is to the liking of the composer." As found by the author, the scores of Chin songs are quite a departure from the melody of "Zui Ong Cao" included in the "Jiu Gong Score Collection", and the latter is a bamboo flute score. Also, the "Zui Ong Ting" in "He Wen Phonetic Notation Chin Score" and "Zui Ong Cao" are different scores, given their different lyrics. In this article, the author made an introduction and comparison of the "Zui Ong Ting Ji" of O-Yang Xiu, the "Zui Ong Ting" of Huang Shan Gu composed to the tunes of "Rui He Xian", the lyrics of "Zui Ong Cao" composed by Su Dong Po, and the original score and interpreted score of "Zui Ong Cao" to tackle the creative art of Chin song "Zui Ong Cao."
